2021 Tax Filing: Due Dates & Reminders
With Tax Day soon approaching, here is a tax preparation checklist to ensure you complete all of your necessary items on time.
April 18th Tax Deadlines
April 18, 2022
- File 2021 Tax Return (Form 1040)
- File Form 4868 to Request 6-Month Income Tax Return Filing Extension
- File Schedule H (1040) and Pay Employment Taxes for Household Employees
- Estimated Tax Payment for 1st Quarter of 2022 (Form 1040-ES)
- Contribute to Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for 2021. Cannot be extended.
- Withdraw Excess IRA Contributions in 2021 to Avoid Penalty if Filing of Form 1040 was not Extended
- Contribute to Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2021
- Contribute to Solo 401(k) Plan or Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) Plan for 2021 by Self-Employed if Filing of Form 1040 was not extended. Contributions can be made after this date if the 1040 is extended
- File FBAR Accounts. Form 114. Can be extended
- Gift Tax Return. Form 709. Can be extended
- Charitable Remainder Trust. Form 5227. Can be extended
Entity Due Dates and Extensions
April 18, 2022 - Can be extended
- Single-Member LLCs. No separate entity return required – filed on owner’s 1040
- C-Corp. Form 1120
- Trusts with their own EIN. Form 1041
- Living Trusts (with the Settlor’s Social Security Number) usually no separate filing – income included on Settlor’s 1040
March 15, 2022 - Possible extensions
- Multi-Member LLCs. Default filing is as a Partnership, but other classifications may be elected.
- Partnership Returns. Form 1065
- S-Corp Returns. Form 1120(S)
